Russia is in the process of developing of scanning tool for malware and preventing the use of VirusTotal in the country. Russia is seriously looking for an alternative tool to VirusTotal to mitigate threats posed by US companies.
VirusTotal - An Overview
VirusTotal is an online portal that helps in identifying malicious programs. A user can upload any program up to the size of 650 MB and mail of size up to 32 MB to identify the nature of the program.
VirusTotal analyzes suspicious files, domains, IPs, and URLs to detect malicious files. This tool is simple to use and provide accurate finding which is secure and trustworthy.
VirustoTal provides collaboration with different security vendors to scan submitted files, domains, IPs, and URLs. These vendors include Acronis (Static ML), AVG, Cynet, Kaspersky, MAX, QuickHeal, Sophos, Symantec, TrendMicro, Lionic, and many more.
Russia's Quest for VirusTotal Alternative
Currently, the Russian government is committed to developing a program similar to the VirusTotal. According to sources, one prototype has also been developed to scan suspicious files. This solution will be developed by multiple Russian companies and organizations as part of a national project.
As VirusTotal not only provides information related to malware, it also stores a lot of personal data. To avoid usage of ViruTotal, as per sources, the Virustotal alternative will be ready for use by the end of 2025.
The Russian government also looking for alternatives to other popular software as the US puts more sanctions on Russia on account of an ongoing fight between Russia and Ukraine.
